Abstract

This study analyzes how the influence of early mathematical abilities on student statistical achievement in the Accounting Study Program of the University of Prima Indonesia This is done to examine whether there is an influence on students' initial mathematical abilities with their ability to understand statistics courses. The method used in this study is a survey method. The respondents were randomly drawn as many as 40 students in the Accounting Study Program at UNPRI Medan. The type of data used in this study is in the form of a student's initial ability test instrument data in a statistical course. From the results of partial and simultaneous tests it was found that there was a positive and significant influence between the variables of early mathematics ability and statistical achievement of students in the Accounting Study Program at UNPRI Medan. Furthermore, the results of the coefficient of determination test indicate that the ability of the initial mathematical ability to explain the statistical achievement variable is 93.10% and the remaining 6.90% is explained by other variables outside the estimation model. These results provide a new understanding that the initial mathematical ability variable can actually bring out the best results of students, namely with these students being equipped with good initial mathematical abilities so that it will be easier for them to understand statistical courses later. Ease of students in understanding statistics courses will have an impact on the high student learning achievement in statistics courses.
